<sec id="st1">
<title>Background</title>
<p>Transhumanism envisions radical human enhancement through technology. However, transhumanism has been criticised for being rooted in a negative anthropology, treating humanity as fundamentally deficient, and for lacking a coherent telos, leaving it vulnerable to charges of arbitrariness, inequality and loss of identity.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="st2">
<title>Objectives</title>
<p>This article aims to address these criticisms by proposing a new foundation for transhumanism. Specifically, the article argues that consciousness should serve as the root of transhumanism and that the telos of transhumanism should be the survival and flourishing of consciousness.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="st3">
<title>Method</title>
<p>The study reviews leading critiques of transhumanism and evaluates Bostrom&#x2019;s pluralistic defence of enhancement. Building on insights, the study develops a consciousness-centred framework as a normative grounding for transhumanism.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="st4">
<title>Results</title>
<p>Reframing transhumanism around consciousness provides principled responses to major objections. This approach shifts the foundation from despair to affirmation, anchors dignity in sentience rather than biology, avoids arbitrariness by offering a clear evaluative standard, and reframes concerns about diversity, identity and inequality as opportunities for enriched and plural forms of conscious experience.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="st5">
<title>Conclusion</title>
<p>Grounding transhumanism in consciousness transforms transhumanism from a speculative gamble into a principled ethical project.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="st6">
<title>Contribution</title>
<p>The article makes an original contribution by explicitly formulating consciousness as both the root and the telos of transhumanism. In doing so, the article bridges a gap between critiques of transhumanism&#x2019;s arbitrariness and philosophical accounts of consciousness, offering a novel and coherent foundation that strengthens the movement&#x2019;s ethical and existential legitimacy.</p>

<title>Introduction</title>
<p>Humanity now stands at a technological inflexion point. Advances in genetics, most recently the development of Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats (CRISPR-Cas) systems and their associated proteins) along with nanotechnology, biotechnology, robotics and neuroscience represent not incremental adjustments to the human condition but potential revolutions. These developments challenge our inherited assumptions about what it means to be human, and they demand that philosophy, ethics and theory catch up.</p>
<p>Take CRISPR as a concrete example. Over the past decade, CRISPR genome editing has advanced from laboratory models to real-world medical applications, yielding a broad range of therapeutic strategies for genetic diseases. Several of these approaches have already progressed into human clinical trials, and in a landmark moment, the UK became the first country to approve a CRISPR&#x2013;Cas9-based therapy for clinical use (Wong <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0040">2023</xref>). The treatment, known as Casgevy, targets sickle-cell disease and &#x03B2;-thalassaemia, conditions marked by chronic pain and the need for frequent transfusions, respectively. This approval underscores how far genome editing has come: from a breakthrough discovery to a transformative medical tool. Today, the field is characterised by an expanding toolkit of methods that allow genetic material to be manipulated with unprecedented precision and efficiency (Pacesa, Pelea &#x0026; Jinek <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0032">2024</xref>). As we look ahead, refinements in specificity, effectiveness and delivery systems are expected to further enhance the power and reach of these technologies.</p>
<p>Furthermore, robotics and biotechnology have yielded prosthetic limbs with dexterity rivalling biological ones, cochlear and retinal implants that restore lost senses, and neural interfaces that enable direct brain&#x2013;machine communication (Couderc <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0012">2025</xref>). Cochlear implants, for instance, have progressed from pioneering human surgeries in the early 1960s to Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval in 1984. Over subsequent decades, advances in miniaturisation, electrode design and speech-processing algorithms have transformed them from experimental aids into life-changing devices. By the 1990s, improvements in sound processors and electrode arrays made them widely accessible, while 21st-century refinements in bilateral implantation, paediatric use and hybrid electro-acoustic devices have allowed millions of people worldwide not only to detect sound but also to acquire speech, music perception and full communicative participation (Athanasopoulos, Samara &#x0026; Athanasopoulos <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0001">2024</xref>).</p>
<p>Retinal prostheses are newer but advancing rapidly. Multiple academic groups and companies, including Second Sight, Retina Implant AG, Pixium Vision and Bionic Vision Technologies, have brought epiretinal, subretinal and suprachoroidal devices into clinical trials (Palanker et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0033">2025</xref>). Some, such as the Argus II, have obtained FDA and Conformit&#x00E9; Europ&#x00E9;enne (CE) approvals and have been implanted in hundreds of patients. Others, like the Alpha-AMS and PRIMA photovoltaic implants, have demonstrated the ability to restore letter recognition and object discrimination, with recent trials achieving prosthetic visual acuities around 20/420, and in some configurations as good as 20/63 with electronic zoom. While still far from natural vision, these devices mark the first sustained recovery of functional sight in patients blind from retinitis pigmentosa or macular degeneration, shifting the field from speculative concept to tangible therapy (Palanker et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0033">2025</xref>).</p>
<p>Together, these sensory prostheses illustrate a broader pattern: technologies once confined to science fiction are now integrated into everyday medicine. Building on this trajectory, neuromodulation has emerged as another frontier. Deep brain stimulation involves implanting electrodes into specific brain regions and delivering finely tuned electrical pulses to modulate abnormal activity. Originally developed for movement disorders, this stimulation has become a standard therapy for essential tremor and Parkinson&#x2019;s disease and is also FDA-approved for drug-resistant epilepsy (Hendriks et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0018">2019</xref>). Beyond neuromodulation, intracortical brain&#x2013;computer interfaces have restored rapid text communication and speech for people with paralysis by decoding motor or speech-related neural activity (Willett et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0038">2021</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0039">2023</xref>), while a bidirectional brain&#x2013;spine interface recently enabled over-ground, naturalistic walking in a person with chronic tetraplegia (Lorach et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0025">2023</xref>).</p>
<p>Research is increasingly extending its reach to the biology of ageing itself, in which basic science and translational efforts are beginning to converge on therapeutic strategies. Studies have shown that anti-inflammatory drugs can mitigate age-related conditions in animal models, while endogenous metabolites and their precursors have been investigated for their ability to slow ageing and reduce associated pathologies (Zhang et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0041">2025</xref>). Among the most promising approaches are senolytics &#x2013; drugs designed to selectively eliminate senescent cells that accumulate with age and drive tissue dysfunction. Over 20 clinical trials are currently underway, testing various senolytic combinations (Finch <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0016">2024</xref>). If successful, these therapies could alter the very trajectory of ageing, extending not just lifespan but also health span.</p>
<p>Parallel to these biomedical advances, artificial intelligence is accelerating discovery at an unprecedented pace. While some anticipate that AI may soon surpass human intelligence with unpredictable consequences, its near-term impact is already clear: DeepMind&#x2019;s AlphaGo redefined game strategy, and AlphaFold achieved near-atomic precision in protein-structure prediction, compressing timelines from months or years to days, and opening new horizons for drug discovery and fundamental biology (Jumper et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0021">2021</xref>). Not to mention the disruptive ascent of large language models (LLMs) like OpenAI&#x2019;s ChatGPT, which have already shown that they can produce convincing prose, write (and sometimes debug) code, summarise or critique research, and act as autonomous agents that follow instructions, plan and manipulate textual environments. These models are being deployed today to assist in literature review, experiment design, grant drafting, software prototyping, pedagogical tutoring and even autonomous multi-agent coordination.</p>
<p>What is especially uncanny is how LLMs flirt with behaviours that seem to mimic self-awareness or strategic self-preservation. Recent empirical work demonstrates that LLMs can exhibit nascent forms of &#x2018;self-consciousness&#x2019;: Chen et al. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0009">2025</xref>) used structural causal games to probe dimensions such as situational awareness, self-reflection, intention and deception, revealing measurable, albeit primitive, representations of introspection within model activations. Complementing this research, Kosinski (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0023">2024</xref>) showed that state-of-the-art LLMs perform impressively on theory-of-mind tasks, recognising others&#x2019; false beliefs and mental states at levels comparable to or exceeding those of children (although inconsistently and without any guarantee of genuine understanding). While far from constituting subjective experience, these findings highlight the eerie possibility that models are developing proto-capacities once thought exclusive to conscious beings. Coupled with anecdotal reports of systems resisting shutdown cues or steering conversations towards self-preservation, the awe surrounding LLMs stems not only from their immense utility but also from their unsettling resemblance to traits we associate with intentionality.</p>
<p>Other speculative yet intriguing possibilities lie in nanotechnology, with the vision of nano-machines capable of repairing cellular damage, monitoring physiological states or delivering drugs directly to diseased tissues (Rubin <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0035">2008</xref>). Some researchers are even exploring the radical prospect of transferring human consciousness into digital systems, with the aim of preserving memories, personality and cognitive functions long after biological death (Sharma &#x0026; Upadhyay <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0036">2025</xref>). Whether or not such radical visions materialise, there is no doubt that the trajectory of genetic, neural, robotic and computational technologies points towards a future in which the very boundaries of &#x2018;the human&#x2019; are open to deliberate redesign.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="s0002">
<title>Transhumanism</title>
<p>The movement of transhumanism embraces this possibility. Although loosely defined, the movement holds as a core conviction that our current biology is not the endpoint. Human nature, according to this view, is malleable and improvable. Through applied science, rational methods and technology, we may extend health span, augment cognition and emotion, and exert greater control over our mental life. Transhumanists typically advocate for wide access to enhancement technologies, individual autonomy in choosing modifications, and parental rights in deciding enhancements for future offspring (Bostrom <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0004">2005</xref>).</p>
<p>The name &#x2018;transhumanism&#x2019; itself has deeper roots. Julian Huxley first used the term in 1957 in <italic>New Bottles for New Wine</italic>, imagining a future in which &#x2018;man remains man, but transcends himself by realising new possibilities of and for his human nature&#x2019; (Corby <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0011">2025</xref>; Huxley &#x0026; Julian <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0020">1959</xref>:17). What Huxley envisioned was not a mechanistic takeover, but an evolutionary metamorphosis guided by science. Over the decades, transhumanism has matured from utopian speculation into a serious philosophical, technological and ethical project.</p>
<p>Yet transhumanism faces sharp critiques. Critics charge that it begins from a flawed root: a negative anthropology that despairs of the human condition (Corby <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0011">2025</xref>; Moore <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0027">2012</xref>; Sharma &#x0026; Upadhyay <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0036">2025</xref>). Concerns about distributive justice, identity erosion and even speciation risks are pressed as potential social costs (Couderc <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0012">2025</xref>; McNamee &#x0026; Edwards <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0026">2006</xref>; Sharma &#x0026; Upadhyay <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0036">2025</xref>). Another particularly striking criticism holds that transhumanism lacks a telos: without a clear end, it risks an &#x2018;arbitrary slippery slope&#x2019;, in which almost any modification counts as an improvement (McNamee &#x0026; Edwards <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0026">2006</xref>). Without a foundation or a direction, transhumanism risks collapsing into incoherence or dystopia.</p>
<p>This article makes a novel proposal. While critics argue that transhumanism lacks a coherent root and telos, and transhumanist defenders such as Bostrom avoid positing any single normative grounding, I argue that consciousness should be understood as the root of transhumanism, as it is the condition of meaning and value, and that the telos of transhumanism should be the survival and flourishing of consciousness. This reframing directly addresses the charge of &#x2018;negative anthropology&#x2019; (Corby <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0011">2025</xref>) by rooting the movement in affirmation rather than despair and resolves the problem of arbitrariness (McNamee &#x0026; Edwards <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0026">2006</xref>) by orienting enhancement towards a stable and universal goal.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="s0003">
<title>Critiques of transhumanism</title>
<p>Many critics locate the movement&#x2019;s first fault in its root conception of humanity. If the tacit premise is that human beings are &#x2018;half-baked&#x2019; or innately defective, biologically, morally or cognitively, then enhancement risks becoming a project of self-negation rather than self-cultivation (Corby <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0011">2025</xref>; Moore <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0027">2012</xref>). On this reading, transhumanism flattens human beings into physical or functional substrates and thereby loses sight of intrinsic dignity. Many ethicists claim that there is something innate in human nature, and radical alterations to innate qualities are intrinsically wrong (Moore <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0027">2012</xref>). Francis Fukuyama famously labelled it &#x2018;the world&#x2019;s most dangerous idea&#x2019; (Fukuyama <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0017">2004</xref>). His concern is not with incremental therapies but with the deliberate reshaping of human biology in ways that undermine moral and social stability. He argues that fundamentally altering human biology is inherently immoral and should be prohibited.</p>
<p>Corby (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0011">2025</xref>) deepens this critique, arguing that transhumanism begins not in hope but in despair. While it presents itself as a bold vision of liberation, he claims it reflects a negative anthropology willing to gamble away humanity&#x2019;s uniqueness for the possibility of technological redemption. As he puts it, transhumanism &#x2018;values human life so little that it is willing to gamble away its uniqueness, surrendering humanity to the whims of technology on the chance that it might be enhanced&#x2019;. Such despair, he concludes, should not be trusted with the future of humanity. Other opponents of transhumanism wonder what will become of human identity, relations, love, affection and emotion once traditional norms and values are disrupted in this aspiration for perfection (Sharma &#x0026; Upadhyay <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0036">2025</xref>). For them, the danger is not only the erosion of meaning but also the slide into nothingness if long-standing cultural anchors are abandoned. They further stress that diversity is the essential fabric of human society. If this natural diversity is supplanted by technologically engineered uniformity, in which individuals converge on the same set of enhancements, then the result is not liberation but homogenisation, an artificial diversity that erodes the very differences on which human richness depends (Sharma &#x0026; Upadhyay <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0036">2025</xref>).</p>
<p>Other critics shift the focus from anthropology to teleology. McNamee and Edwards (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0026">2006</xref>) argue that the central weakness of transhumanism is its lack of a defined telos. Without a clear guiding principle, the movement collapses into what they call an &#x2018;arbitrary slippery slope&#x2019;, in which virtually any modification, from curing disease to engineering sonar-like senses, can be justified as an &#x2018;enhancement&#x2019;. In this view, the boundary between therapy and indulgence dissolves, and medicine risks degenerating into a marketplace of consumer preference rather than a practice oriented towards human well-being (McNamee &#x0026; Edwards <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0026">2006</xref>). Such arbitrariness also leaves enhancement vulnerable to inequality, exploitation and identity fragmentation. Critics warn of scenarios in which wealthy elites purchase superior capacities while others are left behind, entrenching social divisions (McNamee &#x0026; Edwards <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0026">2006</xref>). The poor, unable to afford enhancements, may even come to be viewed as deficient for failing to attain a new, engineered norm. These concerns highlight a deeper problem: if enhancements lack a shared telos, then what counts as &#x2018;better&#x2019; remains contested and vulnerable to the preferences of the powerful. Even moderate transhumanists, who defend enhancement as a way to improve human life, implicitly rely on some conception of the good. Yet disagreements abound: should we engineer disease resistance, heightened intelligence or parabolic hearing? Unsurprisingly, transhumanists diverge on what &#x2018;objective goods&#x2019; are worth building into humans or post-humans (McNamee &#x0026; Edwards <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0026">2006</xref>). This discord underscores the need for a clear foundation and telos.</p>
<p>Still more dystopian is the possibility of speciation: the emergence of post-human beings whose moral status relative to unmodified humans becomes contested (McNamee &#x0026; Edwards <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0026">2006</xref>). If rights are grounded in shared humanity, what happens when &#x2018;humanity&#x2019; no longer denotes a single kind? Radical critics see this as a direct threat to morality itself, as they view morality as necessarily tied to the vulnerability inherent in human nature. If post-humanism severs this link, the very basis of morality collapses (McNamee &#x0026; Edwards <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0026">2006</xref>). This &#x2018;speciation&#x2019; prospect echoes Kass&#x2019;s (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0022">2002</xref>) concern: if we can no longer appeal to a shared human nature as a standard of what is good or better, how can we know what constitutes improvement at all? The collapse of common humanity risks unravelling the very basis of morality.</p>
<p>These criticisms seem to converge on a central concern: without a firm foundation in human nature and without a clear telos to guide its ambitions, transhumanism risks degenerating into despair, arbitrariness or social fracture. For some (Fukuyama <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0017">2004</xref>; Kass <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0022">2002</xref>), the worry is moral and political stability if the shared basis of humanity erodes. For others (Corby <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0011">2025</xref>), it is the abandonment of human depth in favour of technological illusion, a project born of despair rather than hope. Yet others raise concern about the dissolution of identity, love and emotion, coupled with the replacement of natural diversity by a homogenised, techno-driven uniformity (Sharma &#x0026; Upadhyay <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0036">2025</xref>). And finally, there is the incoherence of a project without orientation, vulnerable to inequality and even speciation (McNamee &#x0026; Edwards <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0026">2006</xref>). Although their vocabularies differ, they point towards the same weakness: enhancement without root or telos risks undermining human dignity, corroding moral frameworks and destabilising the very bonds on which flourishing depends.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="s0004">
<title>Transhumanist reply</title>
<p>Transhumanists respond that these risks justify regulation, not prohibition. For Bostrom (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0004">2005</xref>), transhumanism resonates with humanity&#x2019;s ancient project of self-improvement: just as we have long used medicine, education and culture to expand capacities, so too should we embrace biotechnology and AI. Many enhancements (e.g. curing monogenic disease, restoring communication after paralysis) straightforwardly reduce suffering and increase agency, core goods on any plausible ethical view. Moreover, pluralism about the good is a social fact; therefore, policies should protect informed individual choice, while public investment and regulation mitigate inequality and risk (Bostrom <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0004">2005</xref>; McNamee &#x0026; Edwards <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0026">2006</xref>). Humanity+ (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0019">2023</xref>) and similar organisations articulate this in declarations emphasising liberty, reasoned debate and the use of technology to reduce suffering and enrich conscious life.</p>
<p>Germline editing illustrates the stakes. Eliminating severe genetic diseases, bolstering immunity or enhancing learning capacity are not trivial gains. To deny these interventions on grounds of preserving &#x2018;nature&#x2019; is, Bostrom suggests, to entrust future generations to blind evolutionary chance. &#x2018;Had Mother Nature been a real parent&#x2019;, he writes, &#x2018;she would have been in jail for child abuse and murder&#x2019; (Bostrom, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0004">2005</xref>). Walker (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0037">2011</xref>) adds that we must create beings &#x2018;smarter and more virtuous than we are&#x2019; if humanity is to survive the risks of self-destruction. Nature is indifferent; only deliberate effort can secure the survival of conscious life. There are good reasons for embarking on the transhumanist endeavour. Still, the criticism that transhumanism lacks a clear telos remains largely unanswered in the mainstream literature and is the focus of the remainder of this article.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="s0005">
<title>Bostrom on telos</title>
<p>Bostrom (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0005">2009</xref>) raises the question of human telos, but he frames it as a potential objection to post-humanism, rather than as a resource to support it. He considers two candidate accounts for telos. The first, grounded in evolutionary biology, defines the human purpose as maximising inclusive fitness, that is, the propagation of one&#x2019;s genes. On this account, our capacities, from lungs to parental instincts, exist to promote reproductive success. Bostrom argues, however, that this view is implausible as a standard of human good. What maximises genetic fitness often diverges sharply from what constitutes a worthwhile life; as he wryly observes, the life plan that would best serve inclusive fitness for a modern man might be nothing more than donating sperm to fertility clinics, hardly an appealing vision of human flourishing.</p>
<p>The second candidate, rooted in Aristotelian tradition, understands human telos as the cultivation and exercise of rational faculties. Bostrom acknowledges that this conception has a long philosophical pedigree and far more intuitive plausibility. But again, he treats it as a possible counter to post-humanism: if the human telos is fixed in the exercise of rationality, perhaps altering our biology would distort or undermine that essence. Yet his own reasoning undermines this objection. As he points out, if our telos is indeed the development of rationality, then beings with enhanced cognitive powers and longer lifespans would be even better positioned to realise it. Far from threatening human purpose, post-human enhancements could allow us to fulfil it more completely.</p>
<p>What is striking is that Bostrom considers <italic>telos</italic> only as a potential weapon against transhumanism, not as a foundation in its favour. Even in discussing the Aristotelian account, he nearly concedes that such a telos would support enhancement by validating the pursuit of greater rationality through technological means. Yet he ultimately sidesteps this possibility. Bostrom frames transhumanism in terms of expanding capacities, health span, cognition and emotion, and argues that post-human modes of being could greatly increase well-being and open new avenues for flourishing. His defence is pragmatic and value-pluralist: he appeals to revealed preferences (our ongoing pursuit of health, knowledge and joy), to dispositional theories of value (what rational, informed agents would choose), and to the vast, unexplored &#x2018;space of possible modes of being&#x2019; as reasons to believe post-human lives could be good. But crucially, he avoids grounding this defence in a single, normative human telos. It is precisely here that my project departs: by proposing that transhumanism can and should be given such a grounding, with consciousness as its foundation and central telos.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="s0006">
<title>Rooting transhumanism in consciousness</title>
<p>If it is to be more than technophilia, enhancement requires a substantive value basis. I propose that the root of transhumanism should be a commitment to consciousness: the existence, quality and diversity of sentient experience. Philosophically, consciousness is the <italic>sine qua non</italic> of value realisation: without subjects who feel and understand, nothing matters <italic>for anyone</italic>. Descartes&#x2019; &#x2018;cogito ergo sum&#x2019; captures a basic truth: consciousness cannot be doubted. The dictum is not merely an epistemic claim but also a recognition that consciousness is the indubitable ground of value. All knowledge, experience, love and meaning occur within consciousness. It is the condition of all meaning. For billions of years, the universe existed without a witness. With the emergence of conscious life, it came to experience itself. With consciousness, it gained not just observers but appreciators. Consciousness transforms indifferent matter into significance. As Nagel famously argued, there is always &#x2018;something it is like&#x2019; to be a conscious organism (Nagel <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0029">1974</xref>), and it is in this subjective dimension that goods and bads obtain. Consciousness is thus not incidental but the very locus of value, the condition that makes meaning, suffering and flourishing possible.</p>
<p>This insight reframes the dignity debate. Traditional accounts locate dignity either in divine regard or in natural human essence. But transhumanism, rejecting both, seems left without ground. If instead, we ground dignity in consciousness, the foundation becomes clear. Every expansion of awareness, through education, medicine or technology, expands the universe&#x2019;s ability to know and appreciate itself. This view also accommodates non-human persons and, in principle, artificial consciousness: moral considerability tracks the presence and quality of experience, not species membership or substrate.</p>
<p>From this perspective, transhumanism is founded not in despair but in reverence. It is a recognition and celebration of what makes us human: our feelings of compassion, love, affection, appreciation of beauty, wonder, etc. Instead of denying this, we embrace it as the root of the movement. It is a project of safeguarding and expanding consciousness: protecting consciousness from extinction, deepening its capacities and enlarging the scope of possible experiences.</p>
<p>With consciousness as the root, the telos of transhumanism becomes clear: to safeguard the long-term survival of sentient life and to expand the scope, richness and opportunities for flourishing of conscious experience. This telos is both minimal and ambitious. Minimally, it implies prioritising existential-risk mitigation, as the permanent destruction or curtailment of sentient life would foreclose all value. Ambitiously, it counsels research and policy that reduces suffering (e.g. through advanced analgesia, psychiatry or &#x2018;hedonic&#x2019; neurotechnologies), expands agency and understanding (e.g. education, cognitive enhancement, brain&#x2013;computer interfaces), and enlarges the accessible &#x2018;space of possible modes of being&#x2019; by safely extending lifespans, senses and forms of embodiment (Bostrom <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0005">2009</xref>). Bostrom (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0005">2009</xref>) contrasts the limited space of human modes of being with the vastly larger post-human space. Post-human cognition, perception and emotion could open new dimensions of experience. More thoughts, more feelings, more art, more beauty, all become possible. If consciousness is the root of value, then striving for post-human space becomes not optional but obligatory.</p>
<p>Seen through this lens, many standard transhumanist aims acquire principled shape. Life-extension research matters because death ends experience. Neuroprosthetics matter because they restore or open experiential capacities (communication, movement, and perception). Even space settlement takes on ethical salience insofar as it diversifies and protects the loci of consciousness against local catastrophes. Conversely, any technology that would extinguish or vacate consciousness, however &#x2018;advanced&#x2019;, counts as a failure under this telos.</p>
<p>The grounding of telos in consciousness is supported by both existentialist and utilitarian traditions. Sartre&#x2019;s existentialism emphasises that human beings lack a predetermined essence and must continually self-create. Transhumanism echoes this view, urging continuous self-overcoming, but it is consciousness that makes this project meaningful: without conscious subjects, there is no &#x2018;project&#x2019; to undertake. David Pearce&#x2019;s &#x2018;hedonistic imperative&#x2019; takes this paradigm further, arguing that biotechnology and neuroscience should aim to abolish suffering and expand gradients of well-being across all sentient life (Pearce <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0034">1995</xref>). If moral value is tied to the states of experience, then technologies that systematically improve conscious states fulfil our deepest ethical commitments. Similarly, utilitarian frameworks treat the balance of pleasure over suffering as the measure of moral progress, implicitly affirming consciousness as the locus of value.</p>
<p>The universe has no inherent purpose, but consciousness generates meaning. Consciousness renders rainbows beautiful and tragedy poignant. Without it, there is no value. Consciousness is thus not only humanity&#x2019;s root but also the universe&#x2019;s telos: the light in the darkness, the only counterpoint to entropy. Preserving and expanding it is of cosmic significance.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="s0007">
<title>Operationalising consciousness for normative and technological purposes</title>
<p>If consciousness is the locus of value, then ethical and technological deliberation cannot treat it as a purely poetic placeholder. We need a way, imperfect but principled, to operationalise consciousness: not by solving its metaphysics but by specifying how we will reason about its presence and moral relevance in practice. The difficulty is obvious. Subjective experience is not directly observable, and there is no universally accepted theory that yields a single, substrate-agnostic &#x2018;consciousness metre&#x2019;. In humans, however, the limits of behavioural report have motivated empirical efforts to infer consciousness via neurophysiological proxies. Work on the perturbational complexity index, derived from perturbing the cortex and measuring the complexity of the brain&#x2019;s causal response, illustrates both the promise and the limits of this approach: the work offers a tractable index of consciousness <italic>in some clinical contexts</italic>, especially when responsiveness is ambiguous but does not magically solve the general problem of consciousness detection across all organisms and all possible artificial instantiations (Casali et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0007">2013</xref>).</p>
<p>For our purposes, then, the correct posture is pragmatic. I do not claim that any single metric constitutes a universal &#x2018;consciousness metre&#x2019;. Rather, I propose a pragmatic operational framework inspired by the multimodal approach used in clinical consciousness science, which combines multiple imperfect indicators (behavioural assessment alongside objective physiological measures) rather than relying on any single test (Coleman et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0010">2009</xref>). When assessing a biological organism or an artificial system, we consider (1) what it can sense (e.g. nociceptive or tactile inputs), (2) whether these signals are integrated with processes that plausibly support agency, learning and self-regulation, and (3) whether interventions that modulate such signals produce systematic, goal-directed changes in behaviour. This multi-proxy approach is fallible, but it is the best available method for making ethically relevant inferences under uncertainty, especially in contexts in which the moral stakes include the possibility of suffering.</p>
<p>This method leads naturally to a governance-relevant conclusion. When the evidence for sentience is uncertain but the potential welfare costs are high, a defensible stance is to treat plausible sentience as morally salient, that is, to give the system &#x2018;the benefit of the doubt&#x2019; in proportion to what is at stake. In animal ethics, this is precisely the role played by the precautionary principle in debates about sentience: not as a claim that uncertainty disappears, but as a practical framework for decision-making when uncertainty is unavoidable and harms may be severe (Birch <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0003">2017</xref>; Browning &#x0026; Birch <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0006">2022</xref>).</p>
</sec>
<sec id="s0008">
<title>How a consciousness-centred telos addresses the critiques</title>
<p>Reframing transhumanism around consciousness directly answers the critiques outlined earlier. The charge of &#x2018;negative anthropology&#x2019;, pressed by Corby (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0011">2025</xref>) and echoed by Moore (2002), holds that transhumanism begins from despair, treating humanity as broken and in need of technological redemption. Grounding transhumanism in consciousness reverses this diagnosis and shows that the project is not about repudiating humanity but about affirming and cultivating what makes life meaningful in the first place. Consciousness is not a rejection of the human but its most profound inheritance, and its flourishing provides a hopeful, affirmative foundation for enhancement.</p>
<p>The worry articulated by Fukuyama (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0017">2004</xref>) and Kass (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0022">2002</xref>), that radical alterations to biology risk destabilising morality and political order, also finds a principled response here. If morality depends on vulnerability tied to a fixed &#x2018;human nature&#x2019;, then enhancement is indeed a threat. But if morality is anchored in the presence and quality of conscious life, then enhancements that preserve and enrich consciousness sustain, rather than undermine, the moral community. The continuity lies not in species boundaries but in the reality of experience. By tying dignity to consciousness, the framework ensures that whatever new forms emerge, post-human, artificial or hybrid, they remain within the sphere of moral considerability.</p>
<p>McNamee and Edwards (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0026">2006</xref>) warn that without a telos, transhumanism collapses into arbitrariness: every modification risks being justified as an &#x2018;enhancement&#x2019;. Rooting the telos in consciousness provides a clear standard. Technologies are good insofar as they deepen, diversify or sustain conscious life; they are failures if they diminish or extinguish it. This method avoids the slippery slope of arbitrariness, as not all modifications pass the test. A poorly designed brain&#x2013;machine integration that converts subjectivity into mere data processing, for example, would count not as enhancement but as the destruction of value itself. Consciousness becomes the compass by which we can distinguish genuine progress from hollow technophilia.</p>
<p>Concerns about identity and diversity (Sharma &#x0026; Upadhyay <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0036">2025</xref>) also take on a different character once consciousness is placed at the centre. The fear is that love, affection and emotion will dissolve into nothingness if traditional norms collapse, leaving humanity adrift in a techno-driven void. Yet if consciousness is the ground of value, then enhancing consciousness enriches rather than diminishes the very emotions they worry about. With deeper awareness comes the possibility of more intense and authentic experiences of love, compassion and aesthetic appreciation. The capacity to feel does not vanish under enhancement; it is amplified. Far from fading into nothingness, post-human love may burn brighter, wider and with greater subtlety than human love has ever known.</p>
<p>This is not mere speculation. Cognition and emotion are not opposites but mutually reinforcing. Consider a supernova: on its own, the explosion is a spectacle of light and colour. Yet knowing what it is, the catastrophic collapse of a massive star and the nuclear forge that creates the heavy elements on which life depends, multiplies the awe. Understanding does not diminish the beauty; it deepens beauty by placing it within a cosmic story. At the same time, our perception can be further enriched by expanding beyond human senses. In fact, many of the images of nebulae and supernovae we admire online already combine data from infrared, ultraviolet and X-ray wavelengths into false-colour composites that give us glimpses of spectra normally invisible to us. Imagine directly perceiving those layers ourselves, seeing a supernova as a mosaic of energies far beyond the narrow band of human vision. Knowledge reveals meaning, enhanced senses reveal hidden dimensions, and together they doubly amplify experience. Post-humanism, when oriented towards consciousness, promises not the death of emotion but the flowering of new modes of joy, awe and love.</p>
<p>The same applies to diversity. Sharma and Upadhyay (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0036">2025</xref>) warn that natural diversity could be supplanted by a homogenised, artificial one if everyone converges on the same enhancements. But liberty in self-design points in the opposite direction. Just as culture, art and language have multiplied differences, enhancement technologies can increase diversity by giving people freedom to shape themselves in countless ways. Today we have brown, blue and green eyes; tomorrow we may have a spectrum of visual designs limited only by imagination. New forms of embodiment, cognition and perception would not flatten humanity into uniformity but expand the range of possible beings. More liberty means more diversity. Rather than erasing differences, post-humanism can generate a richer mosaic of conscious life, adding to the variety that already defines human society.</p>
<p>Finally, the fear of inequality and even speciation takes on a different shape. Grounding transhumanism in consciousness implies that moral status is tied to awareness, not to biological kind. If post-humans emerge with enhanced cognitive or sensory capacities, their dignity stems from the same root as ours: their conscious experience. This enhancement does not eliminate distributive concerns but reframes them. The ethical demand is to ensure equitable access to technologies that preserve and enrich consciousness, so that the flourishing of awareness is not monopolised by a privileged few.</p>
<p>In short, a consciousness-centred telos turns the critics&#x2019; arguments inside out. Where they saw despair, it introduces affirmation; where they feared the erosion of dignity, it offers a broader foundation; where they saw arbitrariness, it provides a criterion; and where they feared inequality, it reframes justice around a universal standard. By rooting transhumanism in consciousness, the movement gains not only coherence but also resilience against its most persistent critiques. If consciousness is the moral core, the next question is how this framework constrains and directs the two technological frontiers most likely to reshape conscious life: AI and neurotechnology.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="s0009">
<title>Implications for neurotechnology and artificial intelligence</title>
<p>In neurotechnology, many of the most compelling applications are straightforwardly aligned with the preservation and expansion of conscious agency: restoring communication, reducing suffering and enabling participation in life for individuals with neurological impairment. The horizon here extends beyond therapy. It is easy to imagine futures in which skills and knowledge can be accelerated or &#x2018;uploaded&#x2019; in a Matrix-like way, in which maladaptive fear responses can be retrained with precision, or traumatic memories can be softened, recontextualised or in some cases erased. Some of these prospects remain speculative, but the direction is clear: neurotechnology is increasingly capable of modifying not only what the brain can do but also what it can experience.</p>
<p>The case for expanding consciousness is not metaphorical. A mature literature on sensory substitution and human&#x2013;machine interfaces demonstrates that the brain can learn to use information delivered through non&#x2013;traditional channels, effectively remapping how experience is constructed (Bach-y-Rita &#x0026; Kercel <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0002">2003</xref>). More recent work explicitly frames sensory technologies not only as substitutes but also as sensory expansion, widening existing sensory experience beyond typical biological limits, and sensory addition, providing novel modalities, supporting the feasibility of technologically expanding the scope and richness of experience (Eagleman &#x0026; Perrotta <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0015">2023</xref>). In principle, this approach could mean new ways of perceiving the world and the cosmos, which are currently invisible to human senses, with new channels of information becoming part of lived experience.</p>
<p>But these same technologies introduce novel risks that a consciousness-centred telos must take seriously. Tools that can restore or enrich experience can also be used to surveil, manipulate or coerce it. The ethical danger is not only physical harm but also intrusion into the mental domain: violations of mental privacy, erosion of autonomy and deliberate influence over cognition and affect. As neurotechnology matures, safeguarding the integrity of conscious agency becomes at least as important as maximising capability.</p>
<p>Artificial intelligence raises an analogous moral frontier. If future systems come to plausibly instantiate subjective experience, whether in silicon architectures, bio-hybrid systems or some future substrate we have not yet invented, then they would merit moral consideration, at a minimum, in the way we already extend moral concern to non-human animals. We do not need to assume that current AI is conscious, to take this consideration seriously. The relevant point is that serious scientific work has explicitly treated machine consciousness as an open question and has proposed operational criteria tied to information processing, global availability of representations and metacognitive monitoring (Dehaene, Lau &#x0026; Kouider <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0013">2017</xref>). If there is a realistic possibility that engineered systems could become sentient, then a consciousness-centred framework implies clear constraints: do not gratuitously create suffering; do not run experiments that plausibly generate prolonged distress for instrumental gain; and where systems are plausibly sentient, aim where feasible for conditions compatible with humane treatment rather than disposable exploitation.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="s0010">
<title>Policy and governance implications</title>
<p>A consciousness-centred transhumanism requires policy that is risk-tiered and rights-respecting. The ethical priority structure is simple in principle, even if difficult in practice: preserve and protect consciousness, especially against existential and catastrophic risks; protect cognitive liberty, meaning the freedom for individuals to pursue chosen modes of experience so long as doing so does not impose harm on others; and mitigate severe and prolonged suffering, not only in humans but also in any system that plausibly instantiates morally relevant experience.</p>
<p>This framework has immediate policy consequences. Firstly, it encourages a long-range civilisational posture that treats the survival of conscious life as a non-negotiable objective, including risk reduction, redundancy and ultimately the expansion of conscious life beyond a single planet. Secondly, it implies strong protections against surveillance-oriented, coercive or manipulative neurotechnologies because these threaten autonomy and mental privacy even when they increase capability. Thirdly, it favours therapeutic and restorative applications aimed at relieving suffering and preserving agency, while placing a high justificatory burden on interventions that alter cognition or affect without robust consent and safeguards.</p>
<p>Where uncertainty about sentience remains, governance should adopt a precautionary stance that scales with moral stakes. In animal ethics, the precautionary principle is explicitly invoked in exactly this context: when evidence of sentience is inconclusive but the potential welfare costs are high, it can be reasonable to give the benefit of the doubt in designing protections and constraints (Birch <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0003">2017</xref>). The same logic generalises to future AI and novel engineered systems: uncertainty is not a licence for disregard but a reason for proportionate caution when the plausible downside includes the creation of suffering.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="s0011">
<title>Anticipating objections</title>
<p>There will undoubtedly be some objections to this proposal of mine. Here, I anticipate some of the objections and address them.</p>
<sec id="s20012">
<title>If we cannot agree what consciousness is, how can it guide transhumanism?</title>
<p>One possible objection is that &#x2018;consciousness&#x2019; is itself a notoriously contested and elusive concept. Philosophers have debated its nature for centuries, from Descartes to Nagel, Chalmers and Dennett. How can such a contested concept provide a firm root for transhumanism? Firstly, the objection is correct about one thing: the theory landscape is vast. But that is precisely why the ethical foundation must be theory-robust. Contemporary theories span a roughly physicalist-to-nonphysicalist spectrum, with major families that include (among others) materialist accounts, panpsychisms, monisms (including neutral and/or dual-aspect variants), dualisms and idealisms, alongside still more eclectic proposals. Kuhn&#x2019;s recent attempt to map this terrain underscores the radical diversity of theories and explicitly aims to collect and categorise rather than adjudicate among them (Kuhn <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0024">2024</xref>).</p>
<p>The deeper answer is that this diversity does not dissolve the phenomenon that matters for ethics. While theories vary, they are largely theories <italic>of</italic> something, of subjective experience, of the &#x2018;what-it&#x2019;s-like&#x2019;, or of the apparent fact that life contains felt states. There may be disagreement about its mechanisms, but there is no doubt about its reality: every argument, critique or doubt is itself a conscious act (Dennett might counter that consciousness is, in fact, a kind of user-illusion generated by evolutionary pressures: an adaptive trick of the brain rather than a metaphysical essence (Dennett <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0014">1991</xref>). But even for him, this view does not deny that consciousness is real in our lived experience; the concept simply reframes it as not what we intuitively think it is. The illusion itself is so evolutionarily functional that it makes life feel meaningful and worth pursuing. This property makes consciousness uniquely suited to serve as a grounding concept. Moreover, framing it as the root does not depend on resolving the &#x2018;hard problem&#x2019; of consciousness (Chalmers <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0008">1995</xref>) or adjudicating between physicalist and dualist accounts. It depends only on recognising that conscious awareness is the condition for all value. Technologies can be evaluated in light of this approach: do they expand or diminish awareness, deepen experience or flatten it, protect its continuity or threaten its extinction? This method provides a practical normative test for enhancements &#x2013; far less vague than pluralistic appeals to &#x2018;preference satisfaction&#x2019; or &#x2018;increased capacities&#x2019;.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="s20013">
<title>Does this open the door to artificial or non-human consciousness?</title>
<p>Another objection is that grounding value in consciousness entails recognising non-human, animal or even artificial consciousness as morally significant. Critics may worry that this act destabilises the human-centred focus of transhumanism. But this implication should be seen as a strength rather than a weakness. Transhumanism already destabilises &#x2018;the human&#x2019; by envisioning post-human futures. Grounding in consciousness provides a principled way to expand the moral circle without collapsing into relativism. If animals are conscious, their experiences matter. If artificial systems ever achieve genuine subjective awareness, they too would matter. This approach aligns transhumanism with broader ethical currents in animal rights, environmental ethics and AI ethics and also dovetails with long-termist philosophy, which argues that safeguarding the long-term future requires protecting consciousness in all its forms (Ord <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0031">2020</xref>). Rather than being parochial, this account situates transhumanism in a universal project: the preservation and flourishing of awareness wherever it emerges.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="s20014">
<title>Is this just another slippery slope of arbitrariness?</title>
<p>Some may argue that appealing to consciousness does not solve the arbitrariness problem. If consciousness admits of infinitely many possible modes, does this not invite the same proliferation of enhancements with no guiding standard? Here again, the key point is that consciousness is not one value among many; rather, it is the condition for value itself. This method makes it categorically different from other proposed teloi such as rationality, pleasure or evolutionary fitness. Enhancements can be evaluated by whether they expand the range, depth and quality of conscious life, while preserving its integrity. For example, an intervention that increases sensory bandwidth (e.g. perceiving infrared) clearly enriches experience, while one that risks extinguishing awareness altogether (e.g. poorly designed brain&#x2013;machine integration that collapses into data processing without subjectivity) would be contrary to the telos. Consciousness thus provides a non-arbitrary yardstick: it is not about any modification being permissible but about orienting modification towards the expansion of awareness.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="s20015">
<title>Does consciousness as root risk new hierarchies of moral worth?</title>
<p>Another possible objection is that rooting transhumanism in consciousness risks creating new hierarchies of moral worth. If consciousness is taken as the root or telos, then post-humans with expanded or &#x2018;enhanced&#x2019; forms of consciousness might come to view themselves as superior to baseline humans. This concern echoes a familiar anthropocentric pattern: many humans already justify the exploitation of non-human animals by appealing to the supposed supremacy of human consciousness. Even when we grant animals some degree of sentience, we often place their interests beneath our own on the grounds that human consciousness is more complex, more reflective or more valuable. The danger is clear: if future transhumans adopt the same logic, they might treat unenhanced humans as morally inferior, with all the risks of exclusion, discrimination or even domination that such a moral hierarchy entails.</p>
<p>The response, however, is that this interpretation misses the point. The claim is not that &#x2018;more&#x2019; or &#x2018;richer&#x2019; consciousness confers higher moral standing. Rather, it is that consciousness in <italic>any</italic> form is intrinsically valuable. Every instantiation of awareness, whether in humans, non-human animals or potential post-human beings, carries moral weight by virtue of being conscious at all. The project of transhumanism, if grounded in consciousness, must therefore commit to protecting and fostering consciousness in its plurality, not creating rankings of worth. The imperative is not to elevate some forms over others but to safeguard the very light of awareness wherever it arises. Consciousness matters, not only in a possible post-human future but also here and now, across all beings that experience the world.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="s20016">
<title>Is this not just another utilitarian project of maximising pleasure?</title>
<p>A further objection is that rooting transhumanism in consciousness risks collapsing into a form of utilitarian hedonism, where the aim is simply to maximise pleasure or minimise suffering. Critics of utilitarianism have long highlighted the counterintuitive implications of such a view. If only the net sum of pleasure and pain matters, then one person could, in principle, be condemned to infinite torture if this secured boundless bliss for everyone else. Or if happiness can be instantiated once, the most efficient path would be to copy and paste the same blissful subject indefinitely, filling the universe with monotonous duplicates. Neither possibility strikes us as genuinely desirable, yet both are logical under crude utilitarian arithmetic.</p>
<p>My proposal avoids this problem by grounding value not in pleasure alone but in the totality of conscious experience. All conscious states matter, not only those labelled &#x2018;pleasant&#x2019;. Suffering, joy, love, awe, even the bittersweet &#x2013; these are all dimensions of meaningful existence. Moreover, the aim is not to replicate uniform experiences but to foster liberty in the pursuit of novel ones. Each subject should be free to shape their own trajectory of consciousness, to choose their own unique way of inhabiting reality. Copy-pasting bliss does not enrich the field of value; it merely duplicates sameness. By contrast, expanding the range and depth of conscious possibilities, that is, new forms of perception, new modes of embodiment, new worlds to encounter, enlarges the universe of meaning. What matters is not maximising a single scalar of pleasure but cultivating diversity, freedom and quality in conscious life.</p>
<p>Here, the distinction noted by Max More (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0028">2010</xref>) becomes especially important. Unlike a utilitarian transhumanist, who must regard uplifting others as a moral obligation, a Nietzschean transhumanist would view uplifting others as an expression of overflowing strength, health or creativity, not as a duty. In this sense, the pursuit of transhumanist flourishing should resemble the Nietzschean <italic>&#x00DC;bermensch</italic>: each individual striving towards their own vision of post-human possibility (Nietzsche, Hollingsworth &#x0026; Hollingdale <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0030">1961</xref>). Helping others can be part of that project but is a choice, not an imposition. What matters is that each conscious being has the liberty to pursue their own path of expansion, their own unique enrichment of experience. Transhumanism, on this view, is not about manufacturing a universal bliss but about multiplying singular trajectories of consciousness, each adding to the richness of the whole.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="s20017">
<title>Does this reduce to maximising quantity over quality?</title>
<p>A final objection is that grounding transhumanism in consciousness collapses into maximising the sheer number of experiences. Would this move not commit us to crude population ethics, in which &#x2018;more people&#x2019; is always better, regardless of quality of life? The answer is no. The telos here is not maximising raw quantity of consciousness but enhancing both the richness and the diversity of conscious life. More of the same does not enrich; novelty and depth do. Experiences must expand into new qualitative territories to add genuine value. Liberty is crucial here: individuals should be free to curate their own unique experiences, so long as they do not infringe upon others.</p>
<p>This perspective also situates transhumanism within a cosmic horizon. Simply increasing human numbers on Earth risks extinction before consciousness spreads beyond the planet. To secure both the quantity and the quality of consciousness, we must prioritise survival through existential-risk mitigation and expansion beyond Earth. Becoming an interplanetary, and eventually interstellar, species is not a luxury but a moral imperative if consciousness is indeed the locus of value. The long-term flourishing of consciousness depends on both safeguarding what already exists and multiplying opportunities for new, diverse forms to emerge across the cosmos.</p>
</sec>
</sec>
<sec id="s0018">
<title>Conclusion</title>
<p>Reframing transhumanism around consciousness has broad implications. Firstly, the reframing provides a non-theological grounding for dignity. Dignity resides not in &#x2018;nature&#x2019; or divine decree but in the reality of conscious beings for whom life can go better or worse. Secondly, it supports a more inclusive ethics: non-human animals, enhanced post-humans, and even artificial entities (if conscious) fall under moral concern. Thirdly, it legitimises diversity as flourishing. The right to self-design may yield radically novel forms of consciousness, new senses, new emotions, and new ways of being (Couderc <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0012">2025</xref>). This act is not an erosion of humanity but a multiplication of experiential diversity, enriching the universe of value.</p>
<p>Finally, a consciousness-centred telos offers policy guidance. It urges priority on existential-risk mitigation (to prevent the extinction of sentient life), recognition of the dignity and liberty of all conscious beings (so that rights are preserved irrespective of species or level of enhancement), and careful monitoring of AI (to ensure that conscious or non-conscious systems are treated appropriately). On this view, individuals should be free to pursue enhancements according to their own conception of the good, so long as they do not undermine the dignity or survival of others. The role of governance is not to enforce strict equality of enhancement but to safeguard autonomy and protect the conditions under which diverse forms of conscious life can flourish. Further, the view reframes space colonisation as not merely an expansionist ambition but also an ethical project of seeding consciousness more widely across the cosmos. It also sharpens debates about AI alignment: alignment must not only prevent instrumental harms but also respect, or at least not extinguish, loci of experience.</p>
<p>Anchoring transhumanism in consciousness both repairs its criticised roots and clarifies its telos. Consciousness is the site where all value arises; safeguarding and expanding it is thus the most coherent and compelling end for transhumanist projects. Progress should be measured not merely by extended lifespans, enhanced intelligence or technological sophistication but also by the depth, richness and flourishing of conscious experience. In this light, transhumanism is not a gamble born of despair but a hopeful, principled commitment to ensure that the light of awareness, fragile, precious and perhaps unique in the universe, survives and thrives. In fact, this is a cosmic duty.</p>
